WHAT IS IN A 'DIVINE' NAME?

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

There have been many gods worshiped throughout history, Alien gods, Demon gods, Giant gods, Angel gods, Human gods, and now even False gods, but there is only one TRUE GOD! GOD—creator of Heaven, Earth, the Universe and Humankind. We remember them by their names and the works they have done, we address them by their names, as when spirits are invoked, called upon, like Angel Michael, they are called by their names.

God has been given many names, and those names represent who He is and His character, giving us a sneak peek into the Supernatural and the explanation of the divine.

We remember ancient gods by their names and the deeds they did and what they represent like, god of war, gods that guard the gates to the underworld, gods of power, gods of death, god of the sea, and god of the air. Theses traits representing the gods of Egypt; Horus, Isis, Anubis, Hathor, Thoth, fear and guarding passageways to Hades, and overpowering a region or the river Nile, and the Greek gods such as; Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, gods of war, Zeus and his famous thunderbolt, goddess of love, beauty and pleasure, just to say the least, all adamant in getting their ways, some just human beings claiming to be gods with supposed divine strengths and abilities, others just demonic spirits fooling the hearts of men.

BUT GOD!

God is an actual spirit being (John 4:24), with divine powers, appeared as a pillar of blazing fire when talking to Moses and appearing to the Hebrew nation in a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night (Exodus 13:21), and actually releases a thunderbolt and lightening from His throne room as we see in Revelation 4:5. (I have seen this in visions it is spectacular!) Even Angels have appeared in Gods glory and Power, not only because they carry His divine name, but they carry his presence!

An Angel descended from heaven.... And his appearance was like lightning, and His clothes was white as snow — Matthew 28:3

The name of God has been seen as a representation of the entire system of "Divine truth," revealed to the faithful "that believe in his name" (John 1:12).

God was very clear when he told Moses that He is "I AM," and no one can refute who is! No human god, Greek god, Egyptian god, or even demon god could change that, for even demons beleive and shudder (James 2:19). This truly was a defining moment in Moses' life that change the course of his direction and purpose on earth —  when he met God and learnt His name! Moses grew up and was surrounded by the Egyptian gods and none had affected him in this same miraculous way as I AM had.

God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: "I AM has sent me to you" — Exodus 3:14

God has been called many things throughout time, so what is in a name?

But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine — Isaiah 43:1

The names of God are not human inventions, but have divine origin and are based on divine relation. Revealed in Scripture it shows us that a name reveals His character and is the most sacred, distinctive and incommunicable name of God—YAHWEH—the promised name of God.

Yahweh is the name of God which (by Jewish tradition) is too holy to voice, is actually spelled "YHWH" without vowels. YHWH is referred to as the Tetragrammaton (which simply means "the four letters"). YHWH comes from the Hebrew letters: Yud, Hay, Vav, Hay. While YHWH is first used in Genesis 2. God did not reveal Himself as YHWH until Exodus 3. The modern spelling as "Yahweh" includes vowels to assist in pronunciation. Many pronounce YHWH as "Yahweh" or "Jehovah. It was said that not all the priests even knew His name, only revealed to a few, and was whispered aloud once a year by the High Priest when he entered into the Holy of Holies in the temple on the Day of Atonement. Other names used were, Elohim, Adonai, Sabaoth, to avoid the true name being profaned.

During the third century A.D., the Jewish people stopped saying this name in fear of contravening the commandment "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain" (Exd 20:7). As a result of this, Adonai is occasionally a substitute for YHWH. The following compound names which start with "YHWH" have been shown using "Jehovah." (Blue Letter Bible)

In Jewish traditions, great emphasis is placed upon the importance of the Divine Name, which conveys an exact notion of the essence of God. In tradition the sacredness of the divine name or titles must be recognized by the professional sofer (scribe) who writes Torah Scrolls, or Tefillin or mezuzah. Before transcribing any of the divine titles or name, they prepare mentally to sanctify them. Once they begin a name, they do not stop until it is finished, and they must not be interrupted while writing it, even to greet a king. If an error is made in writing it may not be erased, but a line must be drawn round it to show that it is canceled, and the whole page must be put in a genizah (burial place for scripture) and a new page begun. As Moses walked with God and watched miracle after miracle, signs and wonders right in front of his face take place, he came to learn that Yahweh would represent safety, comfort, faithfulness, power, and provision. Yahweh, was the mighty God who answered by fire and by conversation, He was the God who spoke to Moses, and everyone including Pharaoh was afraid of this mighty God! He brought deliverance to the Hebrews out of slavery from Egypt and brought them to the promised land that He told them He would. The Egyptian gods could not compete with such a mighty and powerful God, and after the plagues of Egypt they came to learn this very quickly, that He was way more powerful than any of their magical works, demon summoning, and underworld, gate protecting gods.

In ancient cultures, names were important, as you were called by your family name, and people recognized that you were from a certain family line, city, or region, or a certain village, son of such and from such from such village. They understood that names were imbued with power. To know their name was to enjoy special access and special knowledge because names were often thought to reflect a person’s character or destiny.

Consider “Adam,” means “of the Ground” and “Eve” means “life-giving” or “mother of all who have life.”

According to the book of Acts, when the Apostle Paul visited Athens, he saw an altar with an inscription dedicated to the 'nameless god' and when invited to speak to the Athenian elite at the Areopagus about God, he gave the following speech acknowledging the God in which they were in search of:

Paul stood in the middle of the Aeropagus, and said, "You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.' What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I announce to you. The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn't dwell in temples made with hands, neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things... — Acts 17:22-25

They wanted to know God, creator of Heaven and Earth, they heard about this powerful God, yet didn't have a personal relationship with Him to even know His name, yet they still worshiped Him in case they were able to reach Him.

In 70AD, when the Romans lay siege to the Temple of Jerusalem, they stole very important scrolls with the names of God and hid them from the Church. In 463AD Pope Hilarius found them in the archives, The Archivum Secretum Apostolicum Vaticanum, and banned the documents from ever being read for he aimed to keep the true name of God hidden from the people and had it stricken from all official literature. Containing the true name of God as communicated to Moses in Exodus 3:14 and the true name of God has been passed down from Pope to Pope as privileged secret knowledge and kept hidden from laymen. Pope Francis put an end to the "double life" the Vatican was leading and revealed the secret in 2017.

Why would the Vatican hide such an amazing revelation about God— simply to control the masses and rule the Earth and stop everyone learning the truth about God and the power behind his name!

I have found in my personal worship time that when inspired by the Holy Spirit, I have sung these names to God and the power of God has fallen on me quite significantly. A deeper love is formed and a better understanding of Him when I reach out to Him through His names.

In the Book, Names of God, by Nathan Stone he says, that we can only enjoy God to the degree that we know him. He continues to say that, learning about God's names and titles offers us a fresh way of encountering God and sensing His presence.

The more God reveals to us through His names, He reveals more of the many facets of his character, and that He is not only Judge, or creator, all mighty and powerful, lightening and thunder, that many have come to know of Him, but that He is also a loving Father, a waymaker, a healer, a counselor, a head lifter, a soul saver, and a friend. He is many things, and I would encourage you to study more on the names of God so that you can also enjoy the wonderful blessings, and anointing that comes when you sing back to Him in His Name!

There is Power in the Name of Jesus, the most powerful name there is. God gave Jesus the "name that is above every name."

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name — Philippians 2:9

Why is this name so powerful? It is because of the sacrifice He made—through His obedience to God and dying on the cross for the salvation of all humankind. Jesus made a way for all of humanity to be saved and made right with God, "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:13; cf. Acts 4:12). When we talk about the name of Jesus, we are talking about Jesus Himself, His character and the things He does and has done for us. His name will get you into Heaven and past the gate keepers, get you up close and personal with the Father, give you access to all things. "You can ask anything in my name, and I will do it, so the son can bring Glory to the Father" (John 14:13).

Each time as a believer, when we act in faith, God reveals himself to us in a mighty way. The more we pray, the more we seek God, the more we speak out his name and call on the name of the Lord we will be saved, healed, restored, and lifted up and we will encounter supernatural miracles!

For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised, He is to be feared above all gods, for all the gods of the peoples are idols...— Psalm 96
